Speed Interviewing

Milwaukee-area media professionals from all journalism mediums were represented and interviewed students for internships and jobs. The professionals offered resume critiques and evaluated clips. Marquette University's SPJ chapter stopped by and 15 UWM journalism students, mainly SPJers, took part in the event.

The Business Journal, Small Business Times, Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee Magazine and the Shepherd Express represented the print medium.

WUWM/Milwaukee Public Radio and WTMJ represented radio broadcast.

WISN-12 represented TV broadcast.

 

October 27 and 28, 2006
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Open House
SPJ will represent the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at the annual open house. On Friday, October 27 from 9 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, October 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the officers of SPJ will explain the value of a journalism education at the university and involvement in a ethically-driven, professionally motivated student organization.

Milwaukee Press Club 2006 Hall of Fame Dinner

SPJ President Bradley Wooten volunteered at the press club's annual Hall of Fame dinner. Through a unique and innovative partnership with the Milwaukee Press Club, SPJ is able to integrate student journalists with professionals.

Former TMJ4 Anchor Mike Gousha returns
It’s National Freedom of Speech Week and Gousha will speak to students on free speech and press, his career and challenges he’s overcome. Additionally, he will divulge his current happenings. Gousha was one of the most respected reporters in Milwaukee, so much that the Milwaukee Press Club, the nation’s oldest press club, was inducted into the Circle of the Knights of the Golden Quill – a very high honor indeed.
The event is in Merrill Hall, Room 131 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Student Forum with Green Party gubernatorial candidate Nelson Eisman
Eisman will speak to students about his political platform and the “two-party” system in America. The media plays a crucial role in buying into that system, but should it change? Eisman will speak to that, and more.

Welcome back SPJ members’ event
WISN 12 Kathy Mykleby Welcomed a new school year for SPJ. Mykleby stopped by in Johnston Hall from 1:30 to 2:45 to discuss to her career, challenges she’s faced and overcome and shared many of her personal stories. A dynamic speaker, SPJ was grateful for her time in addressing the future journalists of Milwaukee.

Back-to-School Kick-off week
The officers attended classrooms and staffed a booth in the union in a conspicuous location to recruit new members. Currently, the Chapter has 22 members, but seeks to have 40 by the year’s end.\

Newsmaker Luncheon with U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold
Thanks to a partnership with the Milwaukee Press Club, SPJ President Bradley Wooten sat on a distinguished media panel comprised of Jeff Mayers, president of wispolitics.com, Charles Benson, of TMJ4 and Greg Borowski, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter.
