SPJ is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization.

The SPJ mission includes:

  • To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press.
  • To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.
  • To foster excellence among journalists.
  • To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.

Continuing Professional Education

    When you read Quill Magazine, the Society of Professional Journalist’s magazine, you have your hands on some of America’s finest journalism. It’s challenges, opportunities and responsibilities. For more than 80 years, Quill Magazine has been a respected resource for journalists, industry leaders, students and educators on issues pertinent to journalism.
    Professional development has been a long time important goal of the Society. SPJ programs are developed for this purpose such as the National Convention, specialized workshops, regional conferences, local chapter meetings and other opportunities for the members.

Career Services and Support

    Recognition and awards can be provided for your efforts.
    The Society provides the Mark of Excellence awards that recognize outstanding college journalists at the regional and national levels.
