Student Forum with Green Party gubernatorial candidate Nelson Eisman
Eisman will speak to students about his political platform and the “two-party” system in America. The media plays a crucial role in buying into that system, but should it change? Eisman will speak to that, and more.

Former TMJ4 Anchor Mike Gousha returns
It’s National Freedom of Speech Week and Gousha will speak to students on free speech and press, his career and challenges he’s overcome. Additionally, he will divulge his current happenings. Gousha was one of the most respected reporters in Milwaukee, so much that the Milwaukee Press Club, the nation’s oldest press club, was inducted into the Circle of the Knights of the Golden Quill – a very high honor indeed.
The event is in Merrill Hall, Room 131 from 7 to 8 p.m.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Open House
SPJ will represent the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at the annual open house. On Friday, October 27 from 9 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, October 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the officers of SPJ will explain the value of a journalism education at the university and involvement in a ethically-driven, professionally motivated student organization.

Blogging: What is it and where’s it headed?
SPJ will host a panel of bloggers including Jessica McBride, Dan Polley and Marc Tasman. These three experts will explain what blogging is and discuss citizen journalism through blogging, how to decipher credible bloggers and non-credible bloggers and how to start your own blog.

Minorities in the Media
SPJ is partnering with the Minority Media Association to host a discussion with leading minority editors and news directors. Concerns will address their perceived difficulties and how they’ve overcome them and how to be more aware of diversity in reporting one’s beat.

Social Event at the Newsroom Pub
Thanks to the partnership with the Milwaukee Press Club, SPJ will host a year-end networking and social event. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided.
