A Guide to SPJ at St. ThomasWhat is SPJ?SPJ, established in 1909, is the oldest and largest journalism organization in the United States. The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the United States Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well-informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives and their local and national communities. It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely, and understandable manner. It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists: The University of St. Thomas SPJ chapter has been named Outstanding Chapter in the U.S. Region 6 four times in the last seven years, placing us among the top college SPJ chapters in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota. What benefits do I get from SPJ?
Who can join SPJ?All journalism and communication students can join SPJ. How often does SPJ meet?We meet twice a month for meetings--usually on Thursdays during fall and spring semester. Additional events and opportunities are announced in advance. How can I find out more about SPJ?Visit the SPJ National Website for more information. Or send us an email at stthomas@spj.org.
