Karen Reyes is planning editor of AARP: The Magazine. She joined the staff of Modern Maturity in 1985 and has served there in varying roles as regional, health, consumer, food, and nutrition editor. She also has worked at Dynamic Years, TV Guide, Where Magazine, and the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. Her hallmark articles include editing an investigative piece on cults and the elderly, and coverage of the politics of disability, diversity in America, abuse in the funeral industry, aging and sexuality, age discrimination in the workplace, and guardianship abuse. She is a long-term care ombudsman for nursing homes and is active in the area of gay and lesbian aging. She served on Hillary Clinton's advisory committee on women's health during the 1996 White House Conference on Aging and is the author of "Lambda Gray: A Practical, Emotional and Spiritual Guide for Gays and Lesbians who Are Growing Older."

Julia Bencomo Lobaco, deputy editor of AARP Segunda Juventud, has more than 20 years of experience as a bilingual editor, reporter and columnist. The award-winning Mexican American journalist was The Arizona Republic newspaper 's first bilingual columnist and also reported on city and county government and on education issues. She served eight years as editor of Florida-based VISTA Magazine, the nation's oldest and largest dual-language publication for Hispanics, and was an editor-at-large for CATALINA Magazine. She has been a member and an alliance manager for the AIDS: ACT Now! Partnership, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention project. She has a strong interest in health issues and is the recipient of a Kaiser Family Foundation/National Press Foundation Mini-grant in Health.

Katherine Griffin is managing editor of Alternative Medicine magazine, a
Tiburon-based national publication that was redesigned and relaunched in 2003. She has been both a staff writer and a senior editor at Health magazine and a senior editor at WebMD. Her writing has appeared in Reader's Digest, Real Simple, Islands, the Los Angeles Times, Good Housekeeping, the East Bay Express, and many other publications. Her essay "Childless by Choice" won a Maggie award from the Western Publications Association in 1996. In 2002, she was a science journalism fellow at the Marine Biological Institute in Woods Hole, Mass., focusing on human genetics. She has a master's degree in journalism from the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley.

California Lawyer

Deborah Rosenthal received her BA in literature/writing at UCSD in 1992 and her JD from USF School of Law in 1996. She began working in the field of legal journalism as a reporter in 2000 and as a member of the editorial staff at California Lawyer magazine in 2001. She'll be recruiting writers for both California Lawyer, a monthly magazine about legal affairs with related looks at business and politics, and 8-K, a new magazine about legal developments that affect the business, politics and strategies of corporate executives.

Sarah Chung is the copy chief for Ms. magazine, an award-winning publication recognized nationally and internationally as the media expert on issues relating to women’s status, women's rights and women's points of view. Launched in 1971 in the fledgling days of the feminist movement, Ms. helped to shape contemporary feminism by making feminist voices audible, feminist journalism tenable and a feminist worldview available to the public. Sarah has also written music articles and features for several publications, and was with the LA Weekly prior to joining Ms.

Bernard Ohanian has been associate editor of National Geographic magazine since July 2001. Before becoming associate editor, he was the editorial director of the Geographic's international editions for six years, during which time he launched the magazine's first 19 foreign-language editions. He joined the Geographic as a staff writer in October of 1992. Ohanian's wide-ranging editorial career includes senior editing stints at Mother Jones, the Berkeley Monthly, and Pacific News Service; covering Rome and the Vatican for RKO radio; and writing the text for several books of photojournalism, including "A Day in the Life of Italy" and "Baseball in America." He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he has also served as a member of the visiting faculty in the Graduate School of Journalism.

Nelson Mui is a senior editor at San Francisco Magazine, where he also writes a monthly social column. A lawyer by training and a member of the New York Bar, Nelson began his career in journalism as a fashion reporter/writer at Fairchild Publications and subsequently worked at Fashion Wire Daily, where he covered the collections in New York, Paris and Milan, designers, celebrities, and penned a weekly media column. His work has appeared in The New York Times Sunday Styles, New York Magazine, Men's Journal, National Geographic Traveler, and Travel + Leisure, among other publications.

Bob Schildgen is managing editor of Sierra, the San Francisco-based national magazine of the Sierra Club. In addition to Sierra, his writing has appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines, ranging from alternative venues such as the Berkeley Barb to more mainstream publications including Presbyterian Survey and Los Angeles Times. He is author of "Toyohiko Kagawa," the biography of the Japanese pacifist, labor leader, and social reformer (Centenary Books, 1988). He served as senior editor at China Books & Periodicals in San Francisco from 1988 to 1992, and before that was co-editor of the Berkeley-based weekly Co-op News. He is also a cofounder of the Berkeley-based multicultural book publisher Pacific View Press. A rural Wisconsin native, he is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and holds a master's degree from Indiana University.

Laura Moorhead has worked in publishing for the last 15 years, and is currently a senior editor at WIRED magazine, where she edits both features and section articles. Laura has worked with the WIRED brand since 1994, when she started as the copy chief for the online division of the company. She has also worked for McGraw-Hill, Henry Holt, and The Saturday Evening Post. She co-authored the book "Cocktail: The Drinks Bible for the 21st Century," published by Viking-Penguin and a finalist in the James Beard KitchenAid Book Awards.
