Second WednesdaysThe Bay Area Journalists Mixer The Society of Professional Journalists presents "Second Wednesdays: The Bay Area Journalists Mixer," with special guest, Henry Norr, former San Francisco Chronicle technology columnist.
Wednesday, May 14, 2003 Former Chronicle staff writer Henry Norr sparked newsroom discussions about the limits on civic involvement by journalists when he was fired by the newspaper April 21, following his participation in a March 20 anti-war demonstration. The paper first suspended Norr for two weeks on March 27, and the Newspaper Guild is grieving his firing. Norr's case has prompted lively discussion in journalism circles, and among the Chronicle's readers, who have spoken out both in support of, and against the paper's actions. Cafe de la Presse is feting SPJ's Second Wednesdays with appetizers in the back of the cafe for us, and has a full list of beers and wines. In addition to the typical French cafe fare, there is an international newsstand, stocked with an extensive collection of foreign newspapers, books and magazines. Located at 352 Grant Ave. (and Bush St.), the cafe is walking distance from the Powell and Montgomery Muni / Bart stations, and near Muni's 2 Clement and 30 Stockton lines. This is a cash bar, no-host event. SPJ's Second Wednesdays: The Bay Area Journalists Mixer, is a free monthly event held on the second Wednesday of each month, and features special guests and convivial company. The mixer is brought to you by the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. R.S.V.P. to Joyce Slaton at jslaton@rcn.com .
