Assistant Professor
San Francisco State University’s Journalism Department (www.journalism.sfu.edu) seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in multimedia, digital delivery of news media, and media entrepreneurship.
Responsibilities and Qualifications: The successful candidate must have at least five years experience with online journalism and multi-media news delivery and some experience teaching journalism. A master’s or doctoral degree is preferred, but applicants with distinguished professional experience and a bachelor’s degree will be considered. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate-level courses in such areas as multimedia/online journalism, digital skills (Excel, interactive maps, searchable databases), publication/graphic design, and media entrepreneurship. The candidate should be forward-thinking about journalism in the 21st century and will be expected to assist the department in shaping its evolving multimedia curriculum as it prepares students for professional careers in an industry that’s undergoing profound transformation.
Rank, Salary, etc.: Appointment effective Fall 2009, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications. SF State, as a member of the California State University, provides generous health and retirement benefits, as well as domestic partner benefits.
The Department: The Journalism Department’s mission is to prepare students for careers in a multicultural, “multi-mediated” society. We offer a wide range of skills courses in news-editorial writing, magazine writing, online journalism and photojournalism, and across the curriculum we emphasize cultural competence in journalism as it applies to serving an increasingly multicultural society. Student work appears in award-winning print and online publications. The department’s affiliated Center for the Integration and Improvement of Journalism strives to improve the “4R’s” of the Journalism pipeline: Recruitment, Retention, Revitalization, and Research. Aiming to make journalism more inclusive from the classroom to the newsroom, CIIJ develops programs and conducts research aimed at research addressing the “4R’s.”
