JOURNALIST JOSH WOLF JAILED AGAIN

BENEFIT EVENT PLANNED FOR THURSDAY

SAN FRANCISCO – Blogger and video-journalist Josh Wolf has been ordered back to jail for refusing to let a federal grand jury have unedited footage of a July 2005 protest demonstration. A party to raise money for the Rise Up Network legal defense fund for freelance journalists is still on for this Thursday, September 21st.

Free the Media! is slated from 8 p.m. to midnight at the club Crash on 34 Mason St. (between Eddy and Turk) in San Francisco.

Josh Wolf has received nationwide and international support for defending individual and journalistic rights. He was found in contempt on August 1st and sent to the federal prison in Dublin, California, despite protections supposedly afforded by the U.S. and California constitutions.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered him released on his own recognizance on August 31, pending an appeal by his attorneys. But a three-judge panel of the appellate court later upheld the contempt finding and on Monday revoked his bail.

His lawyers still plan to seek review by the full nine-member bench of the Court of Appeals.

Guest speakers at Thursday’s event will include Bruce Brugmann, editor and publisher of the San Francisco Bay Guardian; San Francisco Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi and Chris Daly; filmmaker Kevin Epps; Jeff Perlstein, executive director of the Media Alliance; Richard Knee, acting Journalism Division chair of the National Writers Union’s Bay Area chapter; and Rob Los Ricos, a writer and former political prisoner. Live music by Magnetism.
