Thank you for your interest in the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s oldest and largest (10,000 members strong) advocate for First Amendment rights and the practice of strong, ethical journalism.
Our Greater Los Angeles Chapter was chartered in 1934, 25 years after the national organization was founded. The chapter has won awards for its variety and frequency of programs aimed at honing professional skills and keeping abreast of the important issues affecting the practice of journalism. In the past year alone we’ve conducted programs on freelancing, multimedia trends in journalism, the role of blogging and “the paparazzi and the press.” We’ve been consistent advocates for government openness and better police-media relations. And we hold almost monthly informal “mixers” that provide opportunities for networking with other journalists and news sources.
Our members work in every field of journalism. Our board of directors reflects that diversity. Any one of our directors can brief you on the benefits of SPJ membership and affiliating with the local Los Angeles chapter, which costs just $20 in addition to national dues.
If you aren’t already a member, I hope you’ll join SPJ and become actively involved. It’s a great way to enhance your experience as a professional journalist.
Sincerely,
David Dow, President
Greater Los Angeles Chapter, SPJ
