
Board of Directors Meeting
6 March 2006

Nelson moved the approval
of minutes of the January 22nd and February 8th board meetings. Janovy seconded. Approved
on voice vote.
Nelson and McGuire reported
that the entries of Heart of America awards had been sorted and had produced
revenue of at least $7,000. There were
more than 200 print entries and more than 100 broadcast entries. McGuire said the print entries would be
mailed to the judges tomorrow (3/7) and Janovy said the broadcast entries would
be mailed to judges on Wednesday (3/8).
Janovy reported that she
had returned entries from the Pittsburgh chapter’s awards competition which we
judged.
McGuire reported that there
were three nominations for the Joe McGuff Lifetime Achievement Award and that
the board could also nominate two people.
Miles stated that he intended to nominate Bob Sigmund. The board agreed to vote on the winner of
the award at the next meeting.
McGuire suggested extending
an invitation to the widow of Joe McGuff.
Steigman suggested we
invite his widow and his children.
There was discussion of the cost and possible space limitations.
Nelson moved that we invite
his widow and one guest. Waterman Gray
seconded. Miles moved an amendment to
Nelson’s motion to extend the invitation to McGuff’s children. Steigman seconded.
The amendment failed on a
vote of 3 for and 4 against.
The motion passed on a vote
of 8 for and 0 against.
Miles announced that he
would ask Kerri Fivecoat-Campbell to chair the membership committee.
Steigman reported that he
had secured one panelist so far for the “State of the Media” program. He said he is trying to get the Kaufman
Foundation for a venue. The meeting
will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, 5 April.
Steigman agreed to serve as
chair of the program committee.
The board agreed by
consensus to posptpone a program on coverage of the intelligent design debate
until after the awards banquet. A date
closer to the upcoming Kansas Board of Education Election (primary in August)
would draw more interest. Members
discussed the possibility of a debate between candidates. Maslin will make contacts.
Maslin nominated Steve Kaut
to fill the vacant position on the board of directors.
Miles seconded. Approved on voice vote.
Janovy moved
adjournment. McGuire seconded. Adjourned on voice vote.
