Business Journalism Boot Camp: September 19, 2008

A FREE one-day business journalism workshop will be held in Detroit on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008. This workshop is open not only to business journalists, but to journalists covering other beats who wish to learn more about covering business.

The “Business Journalism Boot Camp” program covers the basics of using numbers in understanding financials, deciphering government filings, covering private companies and writing effective profiles of companies and CEOs.

DETROIT, June 19 – Jack Kresnak of the Detroit Free Press was named “Journalist of the Year” by the Detroit Chapter
of the Society of Professional Journalists at its annual banquet April 15 at the San Marino Club in Troy.

Jim Schaefer and Joe Swickard received the Wade H. McCree Jr. Award, at the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame dinner at MSU last evening. The award is given by the State Bar of Michigan. It's Jim's second McCree win. Jim is an SPJ Detroit board member. Congrats, Jim.


George Puscas, a longtime Detroit Free Press columnist and sports editor died Friday, April 25th at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. He was 81.

Puscas won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 2007.

He is survived by his wife Delphine of 57 years, four children and six grandchildren.

This workshop is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and hosted by the The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press in in the DMP Academy, 615 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit.

Presenters are Michelle Leder, a freelance financial journalist and founder of Footnoted.org, and Jodi Schneider, training director, Congressional Quarterly, and former business editor of The Washington Post.

“More than 7,000 journalists nationwide have attended Reynolds Center workshops and understanding basic financial concepts and writing with style are skills that belong in every journalist’s portfolio,” said Andrew Leckey, director of the Reynolds Center.
