The Colorado Pro Chapter
of Society of Professional Journalists presents
the Top of the Rockies 2008 excellence in journalism
regional competition. Eligibility period: Sept.
2, 2007 - Aug. 31, 2008. Postmark deadline for
entries: Nov. 18, 2008.

Buffalo Gals Night
Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.
Join us on Wednesday, Oct.
22 at the Denver Press Club for cocktails, bowling,
pizza and poetry. The evening begins at 5 p.m.
when Michelle Baldwin, of Fulcrum Books, will
be the guest bartender. Her tips will go toward
Art from Ashes, a non-profit that helps at-risk
teens gain self-esteem and expression through
poetry.
At 6 p.m., Michelle will host a talk with Laura
Petersen, a Buffalo writer who has a new memoir
titled "Buffalo Gals." At 7 p.m., we'll
head across the street for an evening of bowling
on the very cool, retro lanes of the Denver Athletic
Club. There will be free pizza and a cash bar.

Bad Press Release Theater
Thursday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.
Publicists and reporters
get to turn the tables on one another in a series
of light-hearted improv skits called, "Bad
Press Release Theater or Whose Press Release is
it Anyway?"
This event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6 at
the Denver Press Club. The evening will begin
with a cocktail hour at 5 p.m. followed by the
6 p.m. show. A discussion will follow the skits.
Reporter-turned-actor-turned FEMA spokesman John
Ashton will play the part of the Drew Carey-like
moderator.

Brave New World II
Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m.
Pick up some useful new
skills when SPJ co-hosts a half-day multimedia
seminar at the Denver Press Club from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. The key note speaker
will be Ron Sylvester, a Wichita, Kan. journalist
and co-chair of SPJ's digital media committee.
Ron -- who has been about a year or so ahead of
many of his colleagues on the use of new media
-- will talk about using video, blogs and software
like Twitter to enhance traditional reporting
techniques.
Other speakers include Josh Williams, online projects
editor for the cutting edge web page of the Las
Vegas Sun.
There will also be a panel discussion on where
to find jobs in new media.
Cost is $30 for students and SPJ members, $45

Stop The Presses!
Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m.
Colorado SPJ will co-sponsor
the Colorado premier of "Stop the Press --
The American Newspaper in Peril" at 3 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 16 in the auditorium at the Denver
Newspaper Agency, 101 W. Colfax.
The documentary is being shown as part of the
Denver International Film Festival. The film examines
the economic pressures daily newspapers find themselves
under. It features interviews with journalists
such at Ben Bradlee, Dave Barry and Ken Auletta.
After the screen, we will host a panel discussion
between local journalists and producer/director
Manny Mendoza, a former reporters for the Dallas
Morning News. Among the participants: Al Lewis
of Dow Jones News Service and David Milstead of
The Rocky Mountain News.
