than 90 years SPJ has been dedicated to encouraging a climate in which
journalism can be practiced more freely and fully, stimulating high
standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism and
perpetuating a free press.
The Cardinal States Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, is a group of persons in the southern Indiana, western Kentucky and southeastern Illinois area in the business of communication. Members are in various jobs, including broadcast and print media, and colleges and universities. Members include editors, news executives, reporters, photographers and students. We all are members of the Society of Professional Journalists.
As members of the oldest journalism society in the nation, we are dedicated to the cause of preserving and defending First Amendment rights. We are pledged to uphold the finest ideals of journalism. We are committed to the continued development of the profession of journalism. We stand for the improvement of journalism standards, recognition of excellence, encouragement of young journalists, advancement of the cause of freedom of information and the enhancement the prestige of the profession.
The chapter's annual dues are only $5. Chapter members must also belong to the Society of Professional Journalists. Annual national dues are $72 for working journalists or educators, $36 for retired journalists 62 or older, $36 for college students through the first two years after graduation, $36 for people sharing living quarters with an existing SPJ professional member and $90 for people who don't qualify for the above but support SPJ's mission and seek an associate membership.
